Choosing a running shoe is the most important gear decision a runner makes. At COLLECT Running, our running store in Barcelona at Carrer del Rec 26 in El Born, we help runners of every level every day. Here is the method we use in store, so you can apply it wherever you are.
1. Start with how and where you run
Before talking about brands, ask yourself three questions:
- Surface: asphalt and the seafront promenade, or trails in Collserola and Montjuïc? Road and trail shoes are built very differently.
- Volume: a few easy runs a week or a marathon plan? Higher mileage usually calls for more cushioning and durability.
- Goal: daily training, fast sessions or race day? Many runners end up with two pairs: one daily trainer and one faster shoe.
2. The main families of running shoes
Cushioned daily trainers
The workhorse of your rotation: comfortable, durable and versatile. Think Hoka Clifton, Saucony Ride and Triumph, Brooks Ghost or the On Cloudmonster.
Stability shoes
If your foot tends to roll inwards or you want more guidance on long runs, a stability shoe such as the Brooks Adrenaline GTS can make a real difference.
Performance and racing shoes
Lighter, more responsive, often with a plate: the Saucony Endorphin family or the On Cloudboom are made for tempo runs and races.
Trail running shoes
Grip, protection and stability on uneven ground: discover NNormal, Hoka Speedgoat and Altra Lone Peak.
3. Get the fit right
A good running shoe should leave about a thumb's width in front of your longest toe, hold your heel without slipping and never squeeze the forefoot. Try shoes in the afternoon, when your feet are slightly bigger, and bring the socks you run in. In store, we will have you try several models one after the other: the differences become obvious very quickly.
4. Complete your setup
Good shoes work better with the right kit: technical running socks, running apparel from Bandit, Tracksmith, SAYSKY or Ciele, and running nutrition for long sessions.
