Nomio: the broccoli shot behind Andreas Almgren, New York City Marathon winner

Nomio broccoli sprout shot at COLLECT Running Barcelona

Andreas Almgren made his marathon debut on 1 November 2026 and won the New York City Marathon in 2:06:01. The Swede, who is sponsored by Nomio, capped a historic season. Here is what this broccoli shot is, what the science says and how to use it. The Nomio 4-pack is now available at COLLECT Running, Carrer del Rec 26, Barcelona.

A legendary debut in New York

The lead pack stayed together until 35 km, with ten men separated by less than a second. Almgren attacked there and covered the final 7.2 km in 20:27. He went through halfway in 1:04:01 and ran the second half in under 62 minutes.

Place Athlete Time
1 Andreas Almgren (SWE) 2:06:01
2 Yemaneberhan Crippa (ITA) 2:06:14
3 Kamohelo Mofolo (LES) 2:06:26
4 Benson Kipruto (KEN) 2:06:27
5 Haftu Strintzos (AUS) 2:06:34

It was the fastest winning time in New York since 2023 and just 4 seconds off the Swedish record. Six weeks earlier, Almgren had become world half marathon champion in Copenhagen with a European record of 58:06.

Who is Andreas Almgren?

Almgren is 31. He came through AIK's football academy and won world junior bronze over 800 m in 2014. An engineer and former data scientist, he is "approximately 99 percent self-coached" and has logged every session, heart rate and lactate reading since 2012. He holds the European records for 5000 m (12:44.27), 10 km on the road (26:45) and the half marathon (58:06).

Why Andreas uses Nomio

Tested from the start. Andreas has used Nomio since the prototype stage. Today, it's part of his training and racing routine.

— Nomio

Nomio is one of his sponsors. Almgren says it helps him feel fresh during hard training, in blocks that now go beyond 200 km a week. For the rest of us, the logic is the same at a different pace: getting more out of the work you put in, especially when training has to fit around a 9-to-5.

What is Nomio?

Nomio is a 60 ml shot of broccoli sprout juice, developed in Stockholm. The recipe is short: about 80% broccoli sprout juice, 15% lemon and 5% sugar. Each shot packs the equivalent of roughly 3 kg of broccoli.

Its active compounds are isothiocyanates (ITCs), the family that includes sulforaphane. The brand grew out of research started in 2015 with Karolinska Institutet and the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH). It launched in early 2025.

Benefits: what the science says

According to studies by researcher Filip Larsen (GIH), published since 2023:

  • Less lactate: around 12.7% lower blood lactate during exercise.
  • Less oxidative stress: about 13% lower markers of oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • Better adaptation and recovery after hard sessions.

How it works: ITCs lower glutathione for 30 to 90 minutes, and the body responds with a rebound above baseline about three hours later. That is why you take it before the effort, not during.

To be honest: the evidence is recent and comes mostly from researchers linked to the brand. Nomio is not a miracle. It works at the margins, where close races are decided, and its own founders do not recommend it as a daily supplement.

Who else uses it?

Besides Almgren, Nomio is used by cyclist Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), US indoor mile record holder Cole Hocker and marathoner Conner Mantz. It is also spreading in trail running, orienteering and cross-country skiing.

How to take Nomio

  1. One shot about 3 hours before a key session or a race.
  2. Save it for intervals, threshold work, quality long runs and race days.
  3. Always test it in training before using it on race day.
  4. Follow the storage instructions on the box.
